 A Nigerian-born, Yemi Mobolade has successfully won the election of Mayor of Colorado Springs in the State of Colorado in the United States.


 Mobolade was the first black person to hold office in Colorado Springs, the second largest city in the US state of Colorado, which has a history of being a conservative stronghold.


 According to the information, Mobolade is a refugee from Nigeria and is a wealthy businessman who has never held any elected office before.


 Voice of America reports that it is the latest political setback for the Republican Party in what has been a hotly contested state.


 Mobolade, who has the support of some prominent Republicans, has focused on issues such as hiring more police officers, providing affordable housing, conserving water, and solving business access problems.


 Mobolade, a father of three young children who is married to a nurse, moved from Nigeria to the city of about 485,000 known for its military bases and evangelical Christian center where he started a church for more than ten years ago, and opened a restaurant.


 He also worked in the city government in the area of ​​promoting economic development and helping small business owners.


 He will be the first non-Republican Mayor since the city began electing local councilors 45 years ago, according to The Gazette.
